The IJA was honored to participate in a meaningful Gavel Presentation Ceremony at the Illinois Supreme Court on May 13, 2025.
The gavel has symbolically been used in American courtrooms as a sign of legal authority. It was originally struck after a judge’s ruling to indicate that the decision of the judge is final. It represents the entire judicial system and symbolizes authority, prestige, power and order.
This gavel was lovingly handmade by Judge Andreas “Andy” Matoesian, the longest serving judge in Illinois history. His daughter Jane traveled to Springfield to assist in the ceremony, along with IJA President Mary Colleen Roberts and President Elect and member of the Illinois Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Rochford.
Judge Matoesian sat on the bench In Madison County for more than 53 years, retiring in 2019. He was a strong believer in the rule of law. He once noted that the best part of his job was the opportunity to serve the people.
